It's nice when things look good and balanced, but function rules all!
Years ago my wife compained about not having the right tool for pounding meat to tenderize it (for chicken fried steaks). I went into the garage, grabbed about a 16 - 20 inch piece of scrap 2X4 and cut one end down to a handle (took about 5 minutes including both table saw and smoothing, I didn't spend much time because she was waiting). If I had used hand tools, it may have taken 10 minutes. The kids named it 'Mjolner' and my wife used that mallet for years (it might still be around somewhere) and used it whenever we needed to tenderize some meat. It was the right weight and length to give a mighty whack! I was always a little embarrassed because I had done a quick, sloppy job on it, but she said it was perfect for her use and wouldn't let me "fix it". She said it fit her hand and was a good weight for her.
